David Pfieffer’s has a natural approach to horsemanship. He works closely with each horse, with an eye for detail that keeps him in esteemed company within Sydney’s training ranks.

It’s a proven formula as his success of late proudly demonstates the twenty plus years of experience with thoroughbreds he accumulated whilst working with the likes of Rod Craig, Joe Pride, Graeme Rogerson and following his close mentor and friend, the late Tony Wildman.

David started training in his own right in December 2007, and it didn’t take long for him to produce a headline galloper with horses like Atmospherical (Listed Dilmah Tea Stakes), Graceful Anna ($1 million Magic Millions 3yo Trophy and the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate), Gai’s Choice (Group 3 Gai Waterhouse Classic, 3rd in the Group 1 Tatts Tiara) and Cradle Me (Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes, Listed Razorsharp and Listed Canterbury Classic) coming through.

In more recent times David Pfieffer trained I Am Excited, who won the Group 1 Galaxy, the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes, Group 2 Victory Stakes and the Listed Fireball and Darby Munro Stakes, Glint Of Silver (Group 2 Autumn Stakes), Rocketing By (Group 3 Sydney Stakes), Laure Me In (Listed Scone Cup) and Yamazaki (Listed Silk Stocking).

As patient as he is skilled, his philosophy reflects the respect he holds for his equine compatriots, ensuring he looks set to join the elite band of Australian training heavyweights with ease.

Bloodstock Agent

Oliver Koolman

From his date of birth, Oliver was surrounded by thoroughbreds. Born to Anton and Marg Koolman, the eldest of three boys would be raised on a Thoroughbred and Dairy farm in Otaki, New Zealand. Anton held a trainers license and ran the family owned Stud Farm that grew to eventually take over from the Dairy. Oliver attended the annual Wrightson Bloodstock (now known as NZ Bloodstock) Thoroughbred Sales with his father at Hamilton and Trentham in the days before Karaka. The Koolman family relocated to Sydney in 1991 at which time Olivers parents, Anton and Marg, focused their efforts on bloodstock agency under the banner Anton Koolman Bloodstock. Enjoying immediate success with recent brokerage dealings resulting in Let’s Elope and Richfield Lady bagging 5 Group 1 races in the Spring of 91. At this time, Oliver had put his school days well behind him to focus his learning of the far more appealing thoroughbred world. Working in various countries in numerous stables and on stud farms throughout the world, this is when the “Thoroughbred bug” took over.Settling back in Sydney in 1997 with his future wife Karen, a metropolitan trainers licence was obtained through the AJC licencing committee and a training career began. Gratefully supported by local owners, Oliver and Karen enjoyed their fair share of winners from their Rosehill and later Warwick Farm training stable. However, it was preparing and trading horses to Hong Kong that provided the lions share of income during that time. Such was the commitment of Oliver and Karen to horses under their care, Oliver and Karen elected to wind up the racing stable in 2008 soon after the birth of their first of two children.Eager to get back onto “the land” the Koolman’s successfully negotiated the purchase of 240 acres at The Oaks known as The Hermitage for a Hong Kong client. An unused Dairy farm at the time, the Koolman’s used familiar techniques to transfer the aged dairy farm into state of the art thoroughbred spelling, rehabilitation and pre-training facility. Such was the reputation of the facilities and personal, some of Australia’s best racehorses frequently spelled and were pre-trained under Olivers management. Horses such as Winx and Nature Strip were among the long list of frequent visitors at The Hermitage while G1 winners such as The Autumn Sun, Egg Tart, Youngstar, Funstar and September Run who were notable yearling selections and under Olivers management, called The Hermitage home from their time of purchase.With a stakes-winners-to-runners strike rate second to none, we are delighted to have Oliver (Olly) as part of our Monarch Bloodstock team of likeminded equine enthusiasts that are pooling their resources and eliminating as much risk as possible for our racetrack success.
